I love to hike here. There's a nominal fee to enter the park. Check in at the station on the way in. It's a breathtaking scenic drive up Ranch Road 337 to get there from our place. There are various hiking trails of various difficulties and lengths so the casual stroller and serious hiker will both find something wonderful about this place. It's is a sacred and treasured local resource. Go see for yourself!

Garner State Park is a solid hour drive from us, up scenic Ranch Road 337 to Leakey. It is a nice drive. It is more of a Spring Break type vibe there, where the Medina River closer to us is more of a lowkey hidden gem. The Frio River at Garner doesn't dry up in drought conditions like the Medina does, so if our river is too low, it is worth the gorgeous drive.

It's near our home. We haven't been there personally because we prefer to enjoy our drinks on the porch. But if you're looking for a watering hole, this one is not too far. Always designate a sober driver!

This is the nearest grocery store to us. The prices are higher than in Kerrville or Boerne, but it is convenient and everyone is friendly. There is a Subway restaurant inside the market and a bakery.

It was featured on the premier episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives but it has grown since then and actually has a sit-down dining area indoors now. However, there is ample al fresco seating and it's a very family friendly environment. It's about a half hour drive from our place to there, it's well worth it because you will go past all kinds of exotic game ranches and might think you are in the Serengeti in some spots! Go slow because deer are abundant and there are lots of dips and twists. If you're on two wheels, this is a great route. I like to drive from our place to Tarpley, then head on to Utopia, Vanderpool, and back down 337 from the top side. Check out the map to see what I mean if you aren't familiar with the area, it's a nice mini-tour! As for the food, they are famous for the cabrito burgers. They also serve red stag, quail, lamb, and beef. Personally, I like the fried Gulf shrimp with a baked potato and fresh salad.

They have indoor seating but I prefer to sit out back on their open air patio. It's more of a back yard than a patio. Their food is good, and I'm a food snob. They have food for vegetarians, too. I like the black bean burger. Their sweet potato fries are highly recommended.
