Clones Strand is an approximately two mile stretch of sand and shingle south of Kilmichael point, close to the village of Castletown. Take the old N.11 from Arklow towards Inch. Pass the Glanbia works drive under the railway line, and about a quarter of a mile further on is the left turn towards Castletown. Follow the road to the Golden Anchor Pub. There are three main access points to Clones Strand, but only two are of interest. The first is immediately north of the Pub, take a right and follow the lane down to the beach. To access the second drive south towards Tara Hill take the first left after crossing the river. This lane runs down to the Kilgorman section of the strand. Streams run out at both these access points obviously creating a point of interest for fish. There is a light lateral run off Clones Strand, so grip leads are advisable. The beach gives access to reasonably deep water and fishes best from dusk into darkness. Recent catches include Dogfish (two at a time), Flounder, and small Dabs. This beach had a great reputation for winter Codling in days gone by. Sadly other than an odd fish they appear to be a thing of the past. However spring 2010 saw good numbers of small Codling in the 30cm bracket landed, especially during competitions, so fingers crossed. On the other hand Bass, and Smooth Hound during the summer and autumn are worth targeting. There is also the possibility still of encountering a Ray on calm summer nights, as this beach was once famous for them.

This is SO beautiful that Pierce Brosnan said on his honeymoon in Marlfield House that it was the most beautiful beach in the world.
