XUNANTUNICH – pronounced shoo-nan-tu-nich means “Maiden of the Rock”. It gets its name from a legendary folktale about the ghost of a woman who as locals have it inhabited the sacred grounds as far back as the late 1800’s. A classic period (300 – 900AD) ceremonial center located just a stone’s throw away from San Ignacio in the beautiful Maya village of San Jose Succotz makes this one of the most accessible Maya Temples in the area. Xunantunich boasts Belize’s second largest Maya structures named El Castillo (the castle) standing 130 feet and offering an astonishing panoramic view of the Maya Mountains. To get to the site one must cross the Mopan River by a hand cranked ferry, which then gives us access to the one mile ascent into one of Belize’s most popular sites. Here you will find yourself immersed in pristine jungle surroundings, home of howler monkeys, spider monkeys, birds and iguanas. While exploring along with your guide, you will learn about the history of this site and the Maya civilization that once inhabited it.

Actun Tunichil Muknal – A thirty minute hike through jungle trails and river crossings will bring you to the entrance of the cave. A short swim, approximately 15 feet allows access to “Xibalba” the Maya underworld. From here you will be guided by your headlamp, navigating your way through the cave to the main plaza, where burial chambers can be found. Along the way you will learn about the sacrificial ceremonies that took place in this sacred place thousands of years ago. Intact calcified remains, ancient artifacts and altars where Maya leaders would make blood offerings, tell the story of what once took place. You will return to your hotel or resort late in the afternoon with stories to tell of your adventure and memories to last a lifetime.

BARTON CREEK CAVE CANOEING (Half day tour) – The drive to the cave is very scenic, passing through a few Maya Villages along the way. Formations of stalactites and stalagmites found inside are remarkable. Evidence of use by the Maya exists on ten ledges within the first kilometer of passage. Pottery shards indicate use between the Early Classic (200 to 600 AD) to the Late Classic (600 to 900 AD) periods. The remains of at least 28 humans have been found within the cave. This tour is slow paced, educational, and fun for all ages. This archaeological site is about one hour from San Ignacio and requires about four hours from beginning to end.

San Ignacio Market Day - Saturday is the most popular day

The usual day to day produce market comes alive every Saturday and resembles more of a flea market where people of all ethnicities join in one place to sell their products, food, art, clothing, plants, jewelry, appliances, and so much more. It's a cultural experience and a must see if you are in San Ignacio on Saturday.
