The beach is a rarely paradise that the natural environment has preserved. Only free beaches.
Getting to the beach: From Ancona, head eastwards through the city to the coast road, and pick up the signs for Monte Conero. The road soon begins to rise and within a short while leaves the city suburbs to arrive at the slopes of Monte Conero. Mezzavalle beach is located just before Portonovo bay. You will have to cover approximately a kilometer on foot in order to catch up the beach, it's a kind of a hike so wear shoes to get down the road and to get back up.

Monte Conero, a paradise in the south of Ancona, is truly unique. Here you'll find rock caves and white limestone cliffs totally unlike any other of the Adriatic, from Trieste in the north to the southern "spur" of Italy, the Gargano - a much more Mediterranean experience. The panoramic road winding along the coast offers a spectacular view of many pebble beaches. The area is a regional natural park and a web of signed trails up to the peak. On the top, remains of Palaeolithic settlement dating back 100,000 years have been discovered - the earliest signs of human presence in the region.

The Monte Conero massif (572 metres on the sea-level) leaves an impressive mark on the coast and is characterized by its unique flora and fauna. The institution of the Park dates back to 1987 and its aim is to protect on safeguard nature. Its position half way up the Italian peninsula has made it an important meeting point for many species of northern and southern European maritime flora, including rarities like Bellevalia dubia, Fumana arabica and Aspodeline liburnica. The park boasts over a thousand species of wild plants, as well as a rich bird life. And if that's not enough, the views and panoramas over the sea are stunning.
It's an environmental oasis that extends over 5800 hectares of protected areas, (Portonovo Bay, the Two Sisters ("Due Sorelle") beach, North Belvedere, Piangrande, Raggetti Plain, etc.). There are 18 escursionistic tracks which unfold between Broom bushes and Arbutus Berry trees, the shade of pines and holm-oak trees, all part of the magic of the Mediterranean bush. In addition there are great treasures of art (Santa Maria of Portonovo and San Pietro of Conero), culture and history (Roman archaeological sites), not to mention specific geologic itineraries.

A wide trench protected the fort from land attacks and brick made walls, provided with loopholes, gave possibility to shoot either with cannons and with rifles.

It is in this landscape that the Clandestino of Moreno Cedroni rises, a stilt house inside the bay that bears the colours of the sky and the sea.
Clandestino susci bar is in Portonovo bay. All around, on the surrounding hills, white rock, turquoise water, lavenders and brooms. It is the gem of the Conero park, an uncontaminated oasis rich in Mediterranean scrub that envelop guests with intriguing scents.
It was the 10th of July 2000 when Clandestino opened the doors to its first guests. “Clandestino”, just like a song, the one of Manu Chau, that resounded everywhere at the dawn of the new millennium. It was exactly that extraordinary hit that inspired Maurizio Fiorini, together with the patron Moreno Cedroni, to name that kiosk, few meters away from the blue Adriatic water, Clandestino.
Clandestino has a lot to tell visitors about the Adriatic coast, a story made of scents and flavours, always new, that harmoniously follow each other. A story in the making, enriched every year by a new piece: every year in fact the Chef surprises his guests with a themed menu, which has seen over the years history and literature, myths and legends that really existed in the ‘50, tradition and passion, scents and colours, weave together.
Clandestino hides, among other things, a beautiful story of friendship, but also perhaps the beginning of a great gastronomic adventure that can be summarized in the “reform” of a nowadays famous dish: the sushi, named here susci, at first sight a simple word game which actually hides creativity and professionalism. $$$
