The H.W. Ambrose House, (Dunmeade) is an adaptation of the English manor (or Tudor Revival) style, it is significant as a fine example of a house-type reminiscent of an architectural style popular in Canada, and one very rare in the Southeast. The house, which was built from 1924 to 1926, is a large two-and-one-half-story, cruciform plan, brick residence. A steeply-pitched gable roof encompasses the top one-and-one-half stores and is sheathed in slate. The house is also significant for its association with Henry Ambrose who served as general manager of the Conway Lumber Company from 1906 until his death in 1937. He built the house for his wife, Maude Law Ambrose, a native of Canada. She wanted her new house to remind her of the architectural styles of that area. A contributing one-and-one-half story, three bay garage and pool house, built in the same style of the main house is included in the nominated property. Maude named the house Dunmeade after her beloved Grandmother. Dunmeade was listed in the National Register August 5, 1986. This historical home is often referred to as the house that built Conway due to Henry running the first utilities into town during the construction. The third floor of the home was also used as the local school house for many years and even some neighbors today fondly remember their school years at Dunmeade. The house is also sometimes referred to as “Doctor Courtney’s house”. Dr. Courtney was the third owner of the house and was a renowned pediatrician. He delivered the majority of the older generation of children still living in the Conway area and had an office in the den downstairs. Dr. Courtney sold the house in the early 2000’s after his wife passed away. However, a lot of the Courtney family still reside in the Conway area and own a few of the renowned restaurants in the historical downtown and riverwalk area. The Ralphs bought the house in 2020 and spent a year and a half restoring the property to turn into an exclusive historical Bed and Breakfast now known as The Inn on Elm. The Nuances of Staying in a 100 year old Historical Home: One of the first questions people like to ask is, “Is the house haunted!?” The answer is… maybe, whoever the ghosts are, they are very friendly and like company so no need to lose any sleep! Below are a few guidelines for staying at the Inn on Elm: (The Inn is a NO SMOKING facility) -Please be patient with the hot water. It takes a little bit for the water to heat up and get to some of the areas but rest assured it will come. Hot water is always the faucet on the left. -The lights will flicker sometimes this is completely normal and to our knowledge is not the friendly ghosts trying to communicate. Just turn them on and leave them until they stop flickering. (Please be courteous and turn lights off when last leaving a room) -The windows and doors are all original so sometimes it can be a bit drafty. The house has all been updated with central heat and air. If you are not comfortable and need to change the thermostats please call 843-222-9322. (The marigold suite has a split unit. Please feel free to use that to adjust the temperature to your liking in that room). -The fireplaces are all wood burning HOWEVER only use ready to light 2-3 hour burning fire logs you will need to make sure that the flus are OPEN before any use and closed after use. Please do not use them in the summertime. DO NOT USE IF YOU ARE NOT EXPERIENCED WITH WOOD BURNING FIREPLACES. -All the common areas including the kitchen are allowed to be used by all guests please be courteous of others and leave the common spaces how you found them. Please NO SHOES in the kitchen? The rest of the house is fine. The tile is painted and gets dirty easily. -Pool hours are 8:00am to 10:00pm. Quit times are from 10:00pm until 8:00am All children must use floating devices while in the pool if they can not swim. Do NOT leave any children unattended at the pool or pond area at any time. There are pool towels available in the large gray container at the pool or in the closet by the front door. Please use them (the blue striped towels) and not the towels provided in your rooms. -If you are traveling with a service animal the grass area next to the pool is for pets. Please pick up all the pet droppings and throw them away. (this area is marked) -Only one person on the pond bridge at a time the weight limit is 180 lbs. No fishing in the pond. -Make sure all water is wiped up in the bathrooms. In old houses water on the floor runs down hill and can damage the downstairs ceilings. -The laundry room is available to use please try to wash full loads of laundry. -Each room has additional linen in the drawers and/or closets if you need them. -There is a rollaway bed and crib available, must be requested prior to check in. -In the black outdoor storage container on the porch off the kitchen is tennis racquets that can be used at Collins Park across the street -There are fire extinguishers in the closets on each floor and in the kitchen.

The Crooked Oak Tavern began in 2016 when Jackie and her husband were looking for a new house. They found a property with a beautiful Live Oak Tree in the yard. Months later as the house was being built Jackie's husband proposed to her under the tree while listening to Latin music blasting in the background from the builders working on the house. The following year they said their vows under the same tree and now the tree is the logo for our great restaurant. At Crooked Oak Tavern they specialize in farm to table food. When available they will be using hormone-free beef, pork and chicken, locally raised produce that will change as is available during the growing seasons, and sustainable fish from local waters (no farm raised fish or seafood). Their goal is to provide fresh local food that will not be full of hormones and pesticides. Recipes are a unique blend passed down through their family to you and given a bit of a modern twist. Thy want their guests to leave feeling like they had a home cooked meal mixing in New England, Pennsylvania Dutch, Maryland Seafood and Southern cooking.

Owners and Coastal Carolina Alumni, Sean Kobos and Dan Katawczik wanted a CCU themed bar that was family friendly. Chauncey, the CCU mascot, is described in the novel, “Canterbury Tales” as a “crafty rooster”. They thought what better name, and perfect timing to fit in with the craft beer boom. Sean and Dan keep close ties with the school and its hometown Conway SC. Staying involved in the community and assisting in any way. Join them at the restaurant for a cold beer and great food! Who knows, maybe you’ll catch a CCU game on the big screens, and you can help root for our home team! Don’t worry, Clemson and South Carolina fans are welcome as well, along with everyone else.

Historical Charleston

Charleston, the South Carolina port city founded in 1670, is defined by its cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages and pastel antebellum houses, particularly in the elegant French Quarter and Battery districts. The Battery promenade and Waterfront Park both overlook Charleston Harbor, while Fort Sumter, a federal stronghold where the first shots of the Civil War rang out, lies across the water. Take a day trip down to explore some of the South’s richest history.
