Food scene

It's just a 3 min car ride south as the condo is right on the border in South Kihei. We usually make a morning stop, the coffee is from Maui, and you can even get some great breakfast to eat there or take to the beach. We are coffee snobs and we definitely place our stamp of approval!

If you are looking for local, you should try the 'best poke on Maui' at Tamura's which is a liquor store (sounds crazy right? but it's true) and has a poke counter that is insane good. If you head up S. Kihei Rd. its about an 8 min drive.

Near by option that's just 6 min up the road off of Piilani Hwy and Wailea Rd. It is a local favorites and call in advance as you'll need a reservation. You'll find all the typical food options you might imagine, and their drinks are fantastic. There's usually live music from local musicians too. Dress casual, as you will find with just about anywhere in Hawaii.

If you are up for a small ride to the north side of the island, there is a gem that will knock your socks off and is probably the most well known restaurant in Maui (if not all of Hawaii) called Mama's Fish House. It is on a beautiful beach, the setting is majestic, and literally makes you feel like going back in time. All local caught food, amazing dishes, and the atmosphere is as Hawaiian as you can get. Again we definitely would recommend calling months in advance and securing a reservation, you can also check availability online. If possible, I would time it an hour before sunset as the experience will be one to remember. It is on the pricier side, so keep that in mind if you decide to go.

Best beaches

Literally out of the main entrance of the condo complex is Kamaole III, one of the best beaches as it's super clean, typically clear visibility for snorkeling, has some beautiful lava formations and soft sand. No need for a car as you can walk there, but there is ample parking if you decide to drive.

Right in front of the Fairmont, amazing big beach with nice waves for swimming or boogie boarding. We like to go there early as its quite peaceful and has amazing views in every direction.

Big beach and little beach are fun beaches that will attract more people and becomes easy to socialize with other beach goers. Big beach is known for its big waves and beach breaks, so if going with kids you should be sure to be careful of the water as the waves can become dangerous.

Our favorite morning snorkel spot with the kids! Keawakapu Beach is located in South Maui, between Kihei and Wailea, at the end of South Kihei Road. This beautiful white sand beach, which runs along a fully developed coastline, is approximately 0.7 miles long and offers opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, boogie boarding, or just catching some sun on the shore. We have seen turtles almost every time while snorkeling at that beach by the Mana Kai Resort.

Sightseeing

There are many options and companies that offer tours, but if you were to go anywhere we would recommend the Molokini Crater, a volcanic crater that is about 2.5 miles out from shore. It attracts a ton of sealife and the water is unbelievable. Whether you snorkel off a boat tour, or just snorkel off of any beach, you will be amazed.

Road to Hana, which is a full-day experience around the island that leads you to a small town called Hana. There are many stops along the way that you can take, including various waterfalls, black sand beaches, and sacred ponds. The black sand beaches are state parks that do require reservations so you will want to call and reserve admittance in advance. Also keep in mind you will need to have a good car as the road follows the coast and is windy and may be dangerous especially if raining. The road even becomes one lane in certain instances so good to start early, drive carefully, bring food/water, and take your time. The trip is a commitment, but one to remember.

Whale watching

North Pacific Humpback whales travel over 3,500 miles from Alaska to Hawaii every year to mate and give birth. Marine scientists believe that Kohola (Humpback whales) have been visiting the islands since the ancient Polynesian Era (1-600 AD) and enjoy Hawaii’s deep, warm ocean, underwater visibility, and lack of natural predators. The island of Maui is the best place in Hawaii to whale watch from the shoreline. Admire Kohola breaching and nursing their young in South Maui coastal areas like Kihei and Wailea, or off of North Shore beaches like Paia Bay and Ho’okipa Beach Park. You can even take a whale watching tour to see these playful creatures up close. The best time to see whales on Maui is November through May when thousands of North Pacific Humpback whales grace Hawaiian waters during their annual winter migration. At 25 to 40 tons, Pacific Humpback whales are the fifth largest whale species in the world. They’re a spectacular sight to behold!
