We like the idea of simple comfort food. But comfort food can get boring. And "gourmet food" sounds kind of pretentious here in North Idaho. So, as our food quest continued, it sparked the idea that would become MELTZ. We wanted to give comfort food a twist, an edge, and so we went with "Extreme," we knew we were onto something. Considering Joe's fine-dining roots and Extensive culinary Experience; cheese is a blank canvas, and grilled cheese sandwiches are a perfect vehicle for delivering edgy flavor combinations.

https://www.ridethehiawatha.com/the-trail It was called one of the most scenic stretches of railroad in the country. When the Milwaukee Railroad was operating, the trains traversed through 11 tunnels and over 9 high trestles, covering a 46 mile route that crossed the rugged Bitterroot Mountains between Idaho and Montana. The "Route of the Hiawatha" is most famous for the long St. Paul Pass, or Taft Tunnel which burrows for 8,771 ft. (1.66 miles) under the Bitterroot Mountains at the state line.

I would say it's a must visit, in which it is, however...the hiking difficulty is I think a 3 out of 5. It is WELL worth it. On your way up, you will most likely see mountain goats (rule is to not feed/touch them). The views are breathtaking and it ALL downhill on the way back. ha ha

Just 35 minutes away. Silver Mountain Resort offers skiing, snowboarding, lift served snow tubing and snowshoeing during the winter months. Once summer hits, the lifts keep turning for mountain top adventure. Try mountain biking in the region's best lift served terrain, go for a scenic gondola ride, hike to the fire lookout on Kellogg Peak or just settle in for some huckleberry ribs and listen to live music at the mountain house grill. How about a round of mountain golf at Galena Ridge, or grab some pavement bikes from Silver Mountain Sports and hit the 72 mile bike path that runs right by our parking lot. The sky is the limit here at Silver Mountain!

More than 72 miles of paved path takes you from high mountain splendor, through the historic Silver Valley, into the chain lakes region, along the shore of Lake Coeur d’Alene, over the Chatcolet Bridge to Heyburn State Park, and finally climbs to the Palouse prairie: an adventure for the entire family! The Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes is a year-round recreational opportunity. The trail, restrooms and wayside rest stops along its length, are routinely cleaned. The trail is beautifully maintained by Idaho Parks and Recreation and Coeur d’Alene Tribe. Many miles of private land are adjacent to the trail corridor.

Beginning at the junction of Interstate 90 and Idaho 97, the route travels south along the eastern shoreline of Lake Coeur d’Alene, home to bald eagles and the largest population of nesting osprey in the Western states. Take a break and stretch your legs on the Mineral Ridge Trail, which offers panoramic views of the lake, as well as several learning stations describing the area’s botany and animal life. This area, as is much of ID is home to a variety of wildlife, including majestic eagles, moose, deer, elk, bear and numerous bird species. The route continues through gentle hills and dense forests to the charming town of Harrison. This byway ends at Idaho 3, where it meets the White Pine Scenic Byway and its southern route to the Palouse.

EAGLE WATCHING! Unbelievable the amount of eagles you will see in late winter/early spring. Each winter from November as late as February, the landlocked small sockeye salmon called kokanee gather by the thousands to spawn the die along the gravel shores of Coeur d’Alene Lake, especially around Wolf Lodge Bay. For bald eagles, the kokanee spawn means a feast, and in late fall and early winter bald eagles gather in large numbers around the bay and create one of Idaho’s great wildlife spectacles. The numbers vary from year to year, but it’s not uncommon for more than 200 eagles to be counted. There are a number of viewing areas from shore, including Higgins Point and the Mineral Ridge boat ramp and trailhead.

BY FAR the coolest most trendy place to shop for this and that, mostly clothing...you'll find in CDA...there's also a very cool underground consignment boutique! Currently, Marmalade is a place where mothers, daughters, aunts, nieces, best friends, etc. can all shop together and find something to love and cherish. Our brands are diverse in price range and style as we seek out items that our customers won’t find anywhere else. We celebrate individuality, expression and personal style by encouraging everyone to invest in clothes that make them feel like their best self. There's a lot to discover in Marmalade, including Marmalade Underground, so be prepared to hunt!

Wallace is often called the most interesting small town in the world. In addition to unique attractions like the Oasis Bordello Museum, Wallace makes numerous headlines for its unique and frequent festivals. Gyro Days, the Annual Blues Festival, the Accordion Festival, Yuletide Festival, Teddy Fest... the list goes on. Home of the Pulaski Trail (Google...it is VERY interesting) and to the CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE! No way? YES WAY! Here's why... The falling out was over the safety of the region's soil, which was presumed to have high levels of naturally-occurring lead sulfide. Residents argued that it had been there for thousands of years and no residents seemed to be suffering any ill effects. The EPA countered by saying that if the people couldn’t prove that it wasn’t dangerous, than it must be as harmful as other forms of lead and needed to be treated. And thus the Center of the Universe came to be as a tongue-in-cheek proclamation: if something cannot be disproven, then who's to say it isn't true? Loosely translated, both arguments are the epitome of the phrase,"Because I said so."

Nestled at the mouth of the Coeur d’Alene River, on the southeast end of Lake Coeur d’Alene, lies the picturesque town of Harrison. Harrison’s colorful history mirrors that of North Idaho itself. The gold stampede came through in the 1880s, and the Village of Harrison was incorporated in 1899; it grew to be the largest city in Kootenai County in its heyday.

Sandpoint is the most hippie town in N. Idaho and was named the “most beautiful town in America” by USA Today and Rand McNally. Nestled between three mountain ranges, on the shores of magnificent Lake Pend Orville (Idaho’s largest) and at the foot of Schweitzer Mountain ski and board resort. Sandpoint prides itself as much on “pace” as “place,” with a vibrant arts community, acclaimed culinary and dining scene, overflowing arts and entertainment calendars and an authentic-small-town, not-a-resort vibe.
