The Crystal Coast is an 85-mile stretch of coastline in North Carolina that extends from the Cape Lookout National Seashore, which includes 56 miles of protected beaches, westward to the New River. The island you are on is part of the Crystal Coast. This is Bogue Banks Island and the communities of Atlantic Beach, Pine Knoll Shores, Indian Beach and Emerald Isle are on this island.
The town's reputation as a premier beach resort town has deep roots, and Atlantic Beach is, in fact, the oldest community among the five towns that make up the Bogue Banks. Arguably, development first began in this region with the construction of a fort along the eastern borders of Beaufort Inlet - a site which would later become the permanent home of Fort Macon - but it wasn't until the late 1800s that a colorful Carteret County local devised an intricate plan to make Atlantic Beach a true vacation destination.

In addition, Harkers Island visitors will be roughly a mile away from a National Park Service mandated passenger ferry service, which departs daily during the spring, summer and fall seasons to the shoreline of the Cape Lookout National Seashore. Via this brief 30-45 minute boat ride, visitors can explore the Cape Lookout Lighthouse, as well as the miles of beaches that are famed for exceptional fishing and shelling.

Fort Macon State Park has multiple personalities as the site of a perfectly restored Civil War-era fort, a museum-quality coastal education center and an unspoiled shoreline for swimming, surf fishing and beachcombing. Nearly surrounded by water at the eastern tip of Bogue Banks, the park offers undisturbed natural beauty and opportunities to explore and learn about salt marshes, estuaries and dune fields. The fort — once a project of Robert E. Lee as a young army engineer—has a history as intricate and unique as the ecosystem. Cannon and musket demonstrations and guided tours are regular features, complementing extensive exhibits indoors and out. A bathhouse and wheelchair-accessible beachside areas complete the recreational fare.
There are several great trails at the Fort Macon site. Definitely find time to walk out on the beach from the parking lot and then walk around the eastern tip of the island. You will find beautiful dunes and wide sandy pristine beaches.

PINE KNOLL SHORES
The town of Pine Knoll Shores was originally a grand, private tract of land that was purchased by a wealthy, part-time local, Alice Hoffman. Hoffman purchased 8.5 miles of the Bogus Banks in 1917, and made the coastal retreat her private home during the latter portion of her life, from 1938 to 1971. Quiet and perfectly preserved, this stretch of beach was an isolated patch of shoreline that bordered the busier, and certainly commercialized Atlantic Beach. Upon her death, she left the estate to her niece and her husband, Mr. Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., who donated a portion of the land to North Carolina, and focused on developing the rest as a coastal vacation destination, culminating in the formation of a new and vibrant Crystal Coast community.
