A beautiful and historic Irish country house, Borris House is located in some of the most spectacular scenery Ireland has to offer. Known as a jewel in the crown of Carlow, it is popular Irish attraction both locally and across the country. Situated in the beautiful Barrow Valley in County Carlow, Borris House is one of the more picturesque country houses in Ireland. A stroll through the lush woodlands and gardens and a tour of Borris House will leave visitors feeling like they’ve stepped back in time to their very own Downton Abbey. Constructed in the Tudor style, Borris House was built in 1731 by Morgan Kavanagh. It is the hereditary home of the MacMorrough Kavanagh family, former Celtic kings of Leinster, and the famous 12th century Kavanagh Charter Horn remains on display in the house today. In 1798 it was badly damaged but was carefully restored in 1820 by Richard and William Vitruvius Morrison. Visitors can take the Borris House guided tour that covers all aspects of its history, from the original 15th century castle right up to the present. The tour also takes in the rich history of the MacMorrough Kavanagh family who helped shape the house, estate and village of Borris as it appears today. The ornate Stapleton ceilings and the Chapel of St Moling are both architectural highlights, as is the antique furniture, carpets, porcelain, silver and paintings on display. A not-for-profit famine lace industry was founded at Borris House by Lady Harriet Kavanagh to provide employment for the women of the village during the Great Famine of Ireland in the 19th century—today’s visitors will hear this famous story and see a small selection of Borris Lace for themselves. A walk through the gardens of Borris House will take in the breathtaking views of Mount Leinster, the Blackstairs Mountains and the Barrow Valley. The newly-established Lace Garden takes inspiration from Borris Lace, using symbols and shapes from the lace as well as a white colour palette of plants. In the parkland and church paddock, visitors will find a rich selection of stunning trees like the Lebanon cedar, fern leaf beech and tulip tree, as well as some exotic trees, shrubs and flora. Around the house, visitors can walk along the woodland paths, enjoy the fairy trail along the way and visit the 18th century ice house. Borris House is a great destination for the whole family—children can enjoy the educational trails and complete activity booklets, available as part of the entrance ticket. It is advised to contact the property directly prior to making arrangements to visit. Refer to the website for additional information and admission rates. • Tours between October and May can be made by appointment. Please Call.

A large and beautiful estate covering 16 hectares in total, Altamont Gardens is laid out in the style of William Robinson, which strives for ‘honest simplicity’. The design situates an excellent plant collection perfectly within the natural landscape. For example, there are lawns and sculpted yews that slope down to a lake ringed by rare trees and rhododendrons. A fascinating walk through the Arboretum, Bog Garden and Ice Age Glen, sheltered by ancient oaks and flanked by huge stone outcrops, leads to the banks of the River Slaney. Visit in summer to experience the glorious perfume of roses and herbaceous plants in the air. With their sensitive balance of formal and informal, nature and artistry, Altamont Gardens have a unique – and wholly enchanting – character.

Bree Hill is a Coillte forest which is noted for its aesthetic and recreational value. The geology of the hill is Ordovician rhyolite, a silica rich rock which was produced by a volcanic eruption roughly 400 million years ago. During this period the newly formed hill was probably a small island surrounded by a warm, tropical sea. Bree Hill features three looped walks, individually waymarked, which start at the trailhead at the car park of Bree Community Centre in the village of Bree. These routes provide 23 km of mixed forest trails, offering peace and tranquillity and beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. It is important to note that Bree Hill is a designated venue for mountain biking and although the mountain bike trails are not part of the walking routes, one needs to be aware that some mountain bike paths cross the walking trails at a few points and due care should to be taken. Bree Hill was once part of the Alcock Estate at Wilton Castle and was a working forest before Coillte took it over. There were two lodges on the hill for the foresters and the Beech trees seen on the Ballybrittas Walk and the Beech Walk were part of that forest. It is also interesting to note that a 17th century road crossed over Bree Hill, the remains of which can be seen on the western side of the hill.

The Oaklands trail is set in a tranquil looped walk around a natural oak-dominated wood, elevated in part and overlooking a fishing pond. There is also a linear spur trail which leads to an old stone limekiln and icehouse. Kelly’s Wood (Oaklands) was the seat of the Tyndall family who descended from John Tyndall of Gloucestershire, who came to Ireland during the Cromwellian campaign and had a grant of land confirmed to him in 1668. His wife was Isabelle de Rinzy from Wexford. The house was destroyed by fire in 1957, but remains of the icehouse and limekiln can be found in the woodlands. The wood is now managed by Coillte and Oaklands is a good example of wet woodlands which are important for the less conspicuous elements of biodiversity, i.e. insects and lichens. In wet areas, depending on factors such as degree of water logging and soil pH, wet-loving trees such as willows, birch and alder thrive.

Come visit Seal Rescue Ireland (SRI) for a unique learning experience! SRI’s Visitor Centre, located in Courtown, Co Wexford, invites visitors to come to meet our adorable seal pups while they’re on their road to recovery, take a tour, learn their stories, and be inspired to join the efforts in protecting seals in the wild! Come check out our gift shop, adopt your favourite seal, and make sure to take the time to explore the beautiful surrounding Courtown Woods Walking Trails and scenic coastline. For up to date information on planning your visit, please check out our website: https://www.sealrescueireland.org/visit-us/   Booking: From the 1st of May, SRI is offering one-hour “Seal Feed and Enrichment Experiences” four times per day (10 AM, 12.30 PM, 3 PM, and 5 PM). Check their Website for Availability. To limit numbers and allow for social distancing, participants must book in advance and are limited to six per group (age restrictions apply).   This is your chance to join our team ‘behind the scenes to take part in marine mammal rehabilitation, and help us feed and provide play opportunities for our seal pups in care! There is a €20 participation fee per participant, and as always, all funding goes to support hospital operations costs.
