Food scene

There are literally hundreds of restaurants in Naples to choose from, way too many to list here. However, we did want to offer you a small sample of our favorites as locals; the places we take our family and friends when they visit for some real local ambiance or unique cuisine. If you’re looking for something specific, please let us know and we would be happy to make our recommendations.
Can’t decide what you want to eat or drink except you are yearning for a little of this and a little of that? Does Seafood, Greek, BBQ, Indian Curry, Pizza, Shaved Ice and fresh Beignets sound good? How about a lively & fun outdoor bar overlooking the water with daily drink specials and unique cocktails? If you answered yes then you should head over to Celebration Park, an up-scale Food Truck park just a quick drive away. We really love the fun atmosphere around the bar and great food from all the different trucks who call this place home. For daily updates on the trucks and bar specials, visit their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/CelebrationParkNaples

Don’t think a burger place should be on our list? Well, it’s rated the #2 Burger Place in the Nation by TripAdvisor. This unfussy spot puts Naples and Burgers on the map for gourmet burgers & hot dogs plus beer, wine & unique milkshakes. Their all-natural, brilliantly cooked, deliciously crafted burgers are nationally recognized and locally famous. As a family-owned restaurant, they have a “patrons are family” approach to service that will make you feel at home. Some of our favorite regular menu items include: The Korean Burger with Duck Bacon, Twice Baked (a Burger with all the topping of a Twice Baked Potato), Fig & F.I.N.E. Burger with Goat Cheese, Fig Jam and Buttered Onions…all so yum and all so different. The Milkshakes also offer some “grown up” flavors like Bacon-Carmel-Pecan, Raspberry Jalapeno, Port Wine with Candied Pecans or Blueberry Blue Cheese Milkshakes.

Caribbean-inspired bar/eatery with tropical decor & seafood fare, plus outdoor seating & live music. One of the things I enjoy about this place is its quaint tropical style with open courtyard, peacock wicker chairs and its ability to mix casual dining with an inspired menu. It seems to have once been a small Key-West style home that was converted into a restaurant which makes it a little tropical oasis. Don't be surprised if the owner with the real Macaw bird on her arm shows up for a visit and to make the rounds. Some of our recommendations from the menu: Calypso Calamari, Paradise Chicken Roti, Trinidadian Crab Cake, Three Nut Encrusted Salmon, Steak Caribe and Tuna Madagascar.

The Turtle Club is one of the few restaurants that you can dine outside on the beach with your feet in the sand and just feet from the gentle waves of the Gulf of Mexico. It's a place to relax, unplug, unwind and rejuvenate with high quality food and wine. In addition to its setting and menu, the Turtle Club is a place known for friendly and responsive service from hostess to server. A local restaurant with a 20-year long history, the Turtle Club is great for special celebration meals or a place to "treat yourself" to finer beach dining. Please be advised that the dress code is “resort casual” so no jeans or cut-offs please. Also, they offer both indoor and beach dining so please let your reservationist know your preference when you call. Some of our menu recommendations are: Shrimp & Crab Napoleon, Everglades Shore Lunch, Roasted Beet & Watermelon salad, Petite Filet & Oyster Turtlefeller Dinner and the Sea Harvest Dinner. Leave room for their take on a traditional Key Lime Pie for dessert.

Cracklin’ Jack’s features Southern Style fare in a relaxed, down-home setting complete with ribs, steak, seafood, catfish and fried chicken. Live country music is available on some evenings making this a fun place to be if you want to two-step or shake a flamingo tail feather. What makes this menu unique is it offers some “flavors from the everglades” including Fried Gator Tail Bites and Frog Legs (both fried or sautéed) …if you ever wanted to try them (and I have). Some other favorites on the menu: Fried Green Tomatoes, Sausage Gumbo, Fried Oysters, BBQ Brisket, Baby Back Ribs and their "Huge" Fried Chicken.

The Island Gypsy offers a casual outdoor spot with a seafood-heavy American menu & cocktails in comfy dockside digs overlooking a quiet hamlet in the 10,000 islands of the Gulf of Mexico. It is truly one of my favorite places to dine in Naples. The fish specials fresh from the Gulf, land-lover friendly items, list of tropical cocktails and outdoor waterside dining makes it a must during your visit…especially at sunset. Some of our favorite regular menu items include: Key West Conch Fritters, Lobster “N”eubin Sandwich, Caribbean Fish Tacos, Captiva Chicken Sandwich, Mallory Dock Snapper and the Island Grouper Dinner. As I mentioned, their Tropical Cocktails are fruity, chilled and fun including my ultimate favorite the Crazy Cuban with three types of rum and banana liquor; but if you’re not a rum lover may I suggest you try the Tipsy Gypsy Margarita or the Key Lime Colada (a colada without rum…don’t knock it till you try it).

Beach

Naples offers 30 miles of pristine beaches and has won many prestigious awards. It is often included in countless "best of" beach lists landing in the top and is consistently on Dr. Beach’s list of the best beaches in America. On the west and east coast of Florida where beaches abound, it’s easy to find one here in Naples that's just your style.
The landmark Naples Pier was originally built in 1888 as a freight and passenger dock. Located off 12th Avenue South in Downtown Naples, it has been a popular spot for fishing, relaxation and as a location to watch sunsets since it was first constructed. The Naples Pier also offers beach access, restrooms, showers, parking area and is a congregation point for people-watching as visitors and locals stroll along the beach or pier. It is also walkable to some high-end shops, galleries and casual-to-sophisticated restaurants. The Naples Pier is located 5.6 miles from the Hibiscus Hideaway and is a short 10 - 15 minutes’ drive. Parking is $2.50 an hour and you have to enter the amount of time you anticipate you will be there. You can pay with cash or credit card at the meters when you find an available numbered space in these areas.

Clam Pass Park is a beautiful beach access point in North Naples and boasts 35 acres of coastal habitat with beach access from a three-quarter-mile boardwalk to the sandy beach. This beach park has the feel of a 5 stars hotel, and the relaxed atmosphere of a public beach. The boardwalk threads its way through a mangrove area and over water estuaries so you can see these habitats up-close before reaching the sugar white sands and crystal blue waters of the beach. There is a complimentary tram that takes you from the parking lot down the three-quarter-mile boardwalk so it's easy to get there with all your beach gear. It's been our experience that the tram runs every 10-15 minutes (although they don't make any guarantees on this but that has been our "local" experience). The tram drivers can also offer guests information about what they are seeing to-and-from the beach. If you choose to walk the boardwalk to the beach area, it takes an average of 10-15 minutes at a leisurely pace to walk the three-quarter mile. One of the advantages of Clam Pass Park is the amenities available and that you can almost always get parking, even in-season, at any time. There is the free tram (which we mentioned) but also restrooms, showers, water fountain, a beachside casual eatery (run by the Naples Regency Resort), beach chair rentals, beach umbrella rentals, paddle board rentals, kayak rentals and plenty of room to spread-out. In addition, it has over 160 parking spaces with a flat fee of $8.00 for as long as you want to stay for the day (there is a beach parking meter that is credit cards only, you put your receipt in your windshield to avoid getting ticketed). So if you are looking for a place to spend the day on the beach with a lot of activities to enjoy, this is one of our recommended spots. Clam Pass Park is located at Seagate Drive in Naples and is 9.9 miles from the Hibiscus Hideaway. It can take up to 21 minutes to drive during peak season but offers a lot for the added drive.

Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park was named No. 9 on the Top Ten USA Beaches list and is located on a 199-acre barrier island on the Gulf of Mexico. It also features more than a mile of unspoiled beach. Enjoy fishing, sunbathing, shelling, birding, picnicking, swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving on the natural hard bottom reef just offshore. Resident eagles, ospreys, owls, and other woodland species make room every fall for the migratory shore birds along the beach and in the natural hammock at Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park. Watch for dolphins in the Gulf near the beach and in Wiggins Pass. Bring your binoculars and cameras; there will be plenty of opportunities to use both. Guided tours and interpretive programs occur on a regular basis by experienced rangers and volunteers (event calendar is available when you enter the park). There are amenities to be had at Delnor-Wiggins Pass Park, but they are not available in all parking lot areas (there are five lots total). In parking Lot #4 you will find most of the unique amenities including food/beverages and rentals that include paddleboards, kayaks, canoes, umbrellas and beach chairs. In parking Lot #5 you will find a pavilion with BBQ Charcoal Grills (the pavilion is available to rent for parties but they will let you enjoy it if not reserved at no cost), an observation tower that you can climb for a birds-eye-view and you can walk to the mouth of where the Cocohatchee River meets the Gulf of Mexico. The hard-bottom reef that runs parallel to the beach is near Lots #1 and #2 and is in about 8 or 10 feet of water. All through-out this park (and at all lot numbers) you will find little "oasis’s" under palm trees with shady cover, picnic benches and small charcoal grills. Lastly, not all parking lots have restrooms so if you need the reassurance of a convenient walking distance to a restroom, keep close to Lot #4. What makes this beach park different than most beach areas in Naples is that it is a state park. All other parks are managed by the City of Naples and the County. Where you see the difference is in the parking system. It's $6.00 cash for parking that is collected when you enter the park. They will stop cars from entering the park if parking becomes full, which can happen during the in-season months. They have an electronic sign outside of the park informing visitors ahead of time when parking is not available. Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park is located 15 miles from the Hibiscus Hideaway and can take up to 30 minutes to drive. This park offers a lot of activities and a breath-taking natural beach environment but get there before 10:00 AM in-season to make sure you can enjoy all it has to offer.

Most streets that end onto the 30 miles of beach have access points with metered parking. To find these “end of the street” beach access points, just drive along Gulfshore Blvd. that runs parallel to the Gulf of Mexico. Gulfshore Blvd. is located 5.3 miles away from the Hibiscus Hideaway and is an easy 10 - 15 minutes’ drive. Some of our favorites are at the end of 8th Avenue, 3rd Avenue or 5th Avenue in downtown Naples but we suggest you get there early in peak-season for parking (before 10:00 AM). Most of these beach areas offer amenities such as freshwater outdoor showers/rise stations, water fountains for drinking and children life vests on loaner (free of charge to borrow). However, they do not provide restrooms. Parking is $2.50 an hour; you can pay with cash or credit card at the meters when you find an available numbered space.

Shopping & more!

Naples is a great place to shop and with plenty of places to do it. Whether you are looking for high-fashion boutiques, extravagant jewelry, locally made novelties, tropical inspired art or sophisticated home décor as a memento of your visit, there are plenty of shopping districts to explore.
5th Avenue South has been the historic Main Street in Naples since 1923. A famous destination in Naples, it has an irresistible mix of glamour and laid-back ease. Historic and modern architecture blend together here in eclectic sophistication, while tropical blooms and lush greenery grace the pedestrian-friendly promenades, and each storefront is filled with wonderful finds and delights. One of the nation’s most exclusive addresses, 5th Avenue South stretches from Tamiami Trail to the Gulf of Mexico in Old Naples, and is home to upscale fashion and jewelry, spas, one-of-a-kind gifts, artwork, home décor, fine dining, and entertainment – everything that our discerning residents and visitors have come to expect of Naples. This waterfront shopping area specializes in locally owned stores, unique area products, antiques and local handmade novelties. There are four separate buildings, each with its own unique shops and eateries making it a joy to explore. Some of my favorite shops at Tin City includes: The Naples Winery & Tasting Room featuring quality fruit wines made from key limes, mangos, pineapple and oranges. Tin City Fig & Olive Oil Co. which also has a tasting room and some great locally inspired recipes to try with their tasty flavor infused oils. Although the 5th Avenue store is closer to the Hibiscus Hideaway, the store in North Naples is larger with a wider selection and has a second shop right there (their outlet shop). If you're limited on time, I suggest you go to the North Naples shops. If you can shop till you drop, I recommend you visit all their locations.

Glorious Food, Great Shops and Graceful Byways. Third Street South, the birthplace of Naples, lies two blocks from the Naples Pier, the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico and is surrounded by the colorful original beach cottages and lovely houses of Old Naples. The sophisticated and delightful shops, the renowned fine restaurants and bistros, and the courtyards and antique fountains all await—amidst the lush colorful cascading flowers and green landscaping of historic Third Street South. Some of my favorite shops on Third Street South are: Old Naples Surf Shop, a great place to get souvenir Naples T-shirts and beach items. Tommy Bahama Women's & Men's Fashion shops have colorful island clothing and accessories.

The Manatee Sightseeing Eco-Tourism Adventure is a 90 minute tours that will leave you breathless when you see how close the manatees come to the boat. The tour takes you up the Faka Union Canal which is part of Port of the Islands and the 10,000 Islands. The scenery of the area is breathtaking. Captains guide the boat to find these gentle sea cows by searching for the infamous footprint which they leave behind when they dive. Listen to these gentle sea cows breathe as they come to the surface to greet the boats. Helpful Tipss: Check out Groupon and Free Tour Guide Magazine for coupons often available. Boats are covered but you should still pack your sunscreen and don't forget your camera as you can possibly get some up-close photos. Everglades

If you are not familiar with the Everglades, you may be wondering why we would include this in our recommendations when there are so many award-winning beaches, shopping and activities right here in Naples? Well, the Everglades is only a short drive away and is the only eco-system like it in the world. The Everglades is home to abundant and unique wildlife including alligators, herons, egrets, osprey and so much more. The Everglades, which is 7,800 square miles in Florida, cannot be easily accessed by the public in most areas. However, some of the easiest locations to see a small part of this massive park is just 38 miles away from the Hibiscus Hideaway. See the North American Alligator which can grow over 11 feet in length or the majestic Great Blue Heron which can grow to be 4 ½ feet tall. Take an airboat ride over the water through a labyrinth of mangroves. Dine on Stone Crab Claws, a delicacy like lobster but a renewable fishery (they can harvest the claw without killing). If you’re brave, hold a living alligator in your hands at one of the education centers. If you’re interested in taking a day trip into an Everglades Adventure, drive along the Tamiami Trail with viewing spots to stop along the way. Below are some recommendations for places to explore including places in Everglade City and Ochopee, Florida.
City Seafood is a rustic waterside favorite with outdoor & indoor seating offering local seafood, including crab, shrimp, oysters, frog legs & alligator; everything comes right from their own fishing and Stone Crab boats. When you dine, you can watch pelicans, seagulls, manatees, tarpon, and occasionally alligators playing in the Barron River right off the dock and watch the airboat tours go by. In addition to offering a menu of local recipes and seafood, you can purchase fresh grouper, scallops, gator meat, oysters, Gulf shrimp, frog legs, mullet, Florida Lobster tail, Stone Crabs and softshell Blue Crabs to take home with you from their market (bring a cooler with lots of ice).

The Rod and Gun Club is built on the original structure of the first permanent white settler who founded Everglades City in 1864. As the gateway to the Everglades, the Rod and Gun Club was the place to stay over the years with guests including celebrities, dignitaries and several United States Presidents. When you visit this historical landmark Inn and Dining Room, much of the old Florida decor hasn't been changed and it’s like taking a step back in time. Sit on the sweeping porch overlooking the water while sipping a cocktail or dining on a locally inspired menu. Feel like some of the past and present celebrity guests including: Presidents Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Hoover and Nixon; John Wayne, Ernest Hemingway, Gypsy Rose Lee, Burt Reynolds, Sally Fields, Jack Nicklas, Roy Clark, Eddie Arnold, Sean Connery, Joe Pesci, Danny Glover, Phil Donahue, Peter Jennings, and the list goes on. This is a great place to take photos or selfies so bring your camera.
