Best Chapel Hill Restaurants

There is a lot of dining in Chapel Hill to choose from, and most of it is exceptional. Here are some of my favorite places.
Great for breakfast and lunch. Merritt's is locally owned and super delicious. They're famous for their BLTs, try one on marble rye or sourdough. Don't sleep on their homemade desserts, either. They can be a little crowded around lunch time, but definitely worth the wait. Outdoor seating, pet friendly, closed on Mondays.

It really doesn't get much better than Med Deli. Basically everything in their deli case is amazing, but I'd recommend the avocado salad, the carrot walnut salad and the spanakopita. Grab a gyro or a kabob and relax in a casual atmosphere while you people-watch everyone walking down Franklin Street (the main Chapel Hill drag).

It's not for nothing that Al's Burger Shack was voted the best burger in the country by trip advisor. These are seriously good fare. Try the "Bobo Chili Cheeseburger", the burger that won "Best in the Country" or the "Mookie" (my fav). Make sure to order some rosemary crinkle fries for the table. Two locations - one on Franklin Street and one in Southern Village. Outdoor seating, pet friendly, closed Sundays.

Looking for upscale dining that will knock your socks off? Try Lantern, a Chapel Hill staple of modern asian fusion, and some of the most delicious food you can find anywhere. The head chef there won the James Beard award for Best Chef: Southeast in 2011 for her work at Lantern. Definitely make a reservation, but if you can't get one, head to the Lantern bar just behind the restaurant, grab one of their amazing signature cocktails, and order off the menu there. Closed Sundays.

Top of the Hill is a Chapel Hill classic. Hit them up for dinner or for brunch on the weekends. Definitely call ahead and see if you can get a seat on the patio outside where you can take in a panoramic view of Franklin Street from their third story vantage point.
