Preveli Monastery is home to a remote religious community which was involved in partisan activities during Crete’s struggle for freedom. The monks hid the allied soldiers and helped them escape at night by submarine into Africa. Moreover, Preveli is famous for the Holy Cross (Timios Stavros) stored in the temple, that was donated by the Abbot Effraim Prevelis and is considered miraculous. The cross bears part of the True Cross at its base and comes from Constantinople and it’s decorated with gold and diamonds. Finally, many of the valuable objects (sacred vessels, vestments, gospels) and icons are exhibited in a small museum, inside the monastery.

The beautiful monastery of Arkadi can be found in the foothills of the western Ida (Psiloritis) Mountain. The Cretans consider the monastery as a symbol of freedom from the turks. During the revolt in 1866, hundreds of refugees and Cretan freedom fighters sought sanctuary in the wine store rooms with the monks, where there was also a stash of gunpowder. When the Turks made their way towards their last refuge, the Abbot gave the order to fire the gunpowder. Hundreds of Cretans and Turks were killed; giving real meaning to the battle cry of Crete - “freedom or death”!

The Kakoperatos canyon is located in Agios Vasilios area and it’s a tributary of the Megalos River (Kourtaliotis) and as its name suggests (bad passage in Greek) it cannot be accessed from humans (by trekking). It is a strikingly beautiful and rugged canyon, ideal for canyoning. It has water most of the year and shapes 7-8 impressive waterfalls with deep ponds, ideal for jumps. Possibly, there is no other canyon in Crete with such beautiful and vivid turquoise waters. It’s exit is next to the last houses of Agios Vasilios and the stream crosses the courtyards of the village!
