This is where the locals go to eat. It's not "fine dining," but there's a pretty descent salad bar, a good selection of burgers and other food you would expect from a roadside grill. Their nachos are the thing that everyone raves about. Good food, live music sometimes, and a laid back atmosphere. Open 5-9pm. Closed Monday & Tuesday.

Joseph Schorp, the man who built the house and cabin on our property and the original owner, was the carpenter who built the pews in this church. It's a beautiful old Catholic church right on the town square.

Castroville was one of the very first cities to have electricity because of the water mill on site that was converted to generate power. The original hotel is still operated there and had a "facelift" in 2016.

The headwaters of the San Antonio River. Depending on how much it's been raining in the years or months before you arrive, the water might be trickling out of the ground, or flooding up. Either way, it's fascinating to see a river start by coming up out of the ground. There is a nice park and walkways nearby and it's located on the campus of The University of Incarnate Word, so it's free to visit.

Parks & Nature
While it doesn't show up on all maps as a road that accesses the river, Vienna St. is actually the best way to get to the Medina River. Koenig Park is between Berlin St. and Vienna. Walking down to the river is via a somewhat steep and kind of bumpy road, but it's worth the short hike. The park itself is a place where they frequently hold festivals and such, but it's not a typical park with playground equipment or sports fields.

This is a more traditional park, with playground equipment, picnic tables, and sports fields. There's also a short, but steep trail to the top of a tall hill in Castroville, sometimes call "Cross Hill" because of the religious crosses there. There is access to the river from the park and if the weather is nice there are usually people getting wet. They do charge a modest fee for using the picnic tables, handled on an honor basis. There is also a community swimming pool here and I believe you can pay a modest visitor fee to use the pool on a daily basis when it's open during the summer.
