Sightseeing

Old Town is accessible by car but you have to pay an entrance fee. There is a big parking area at Marina Port Sozopol
The Old Town of Sozopol is an architectural reserve and the most popular tourist destination on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. Sozopol is considered the oldest Bulgarian town on the seaside and remains of ancient construction and life can still be seen around or exhibited in the local museums. The Old Town of Sozopol is situated on a rocky peninsula 35 km south of Burgas. Like most conserved 'old towns' it features narrow stone laid streets, with tiny or no sidewalks, churches, antique houses and plenty of small hotels, galleries, restaurants, shops and street vendors and performers. Part of the ancient city wall has been restored together with the watch tower. These lie along a picturesque promenade by the sea and are particularly attractive at night. The old houses are samples of the typical Revival architecture, most of them have 2 or 3 floors, wood panelling protection on the outside walls, cool stone ground floors and charming little courtyards.

Beautiful beaches to visit souther of Gradina. It takes just a day to go by car and have an amazing experience. One of the most beautiful places around Sinemorets is where the Veleka River flows into the Black Sea via a stunning estuary. If you climb the hill just above, you’ll glimpse how the differently coloured waters swirl and mingle in the estuary. Veleka River itself is part of Strandja Nature Park and is bursting with life. Join a boat tour along the river to learn more about the area and to see the lush green woods on the riverbanks. If you need some physical activity, head south of Butamyata Beach and hike along the coast which features peculiar rock formations (a canyon, Sisyphus’s Cliffs, the Cave of Pigeons). The path is not very steep but it’s advisable to put comfortable shoes on instead of flip flops. There are a few information boards along the route where you can read more about the formation of the coast. The route will take you to a protected area called Silistar where another little-known beach is located. Lipite beach lies about 1-2km to the south of the Butamyata beach near the seaside town of Sinemorets (the latter situated some 90km to the south of Bourgas). The beach lies in the Strandzha protected area and therefore motor vehicles are forbidden there. The only way to get there is on foot, by following a narrow path that starts at the southern end of the Butamyata beach and climbs through the rocks, bordering the beach. It takes no more than a 15-20 minute walk (but in the glaring sun) to get there on foot, but the path is not suitable for small children. The trip is worth the effort, though, as it leads to a marvelous bay with rocks on both sides and woods behind. The beach is sandy with calm shallow waters that are almost always quiet, even in windy weather. Once upon a time, the area was covered by lime trees, thus giving the same name (Lipite meaning Lime-trees in Bulgarian) to the beach. The lime trees are long gone but the area still carries that name. Those planning to spend a day there should bear in mind that the tourist industry has not reached the Lipite beach and visitors should bring their food and beverages with them.
