The palace is magnificent, the furniture befitting of a queen and in the best of taste. The gardens have everything that art has ever created. (Johann Edler von Kurzböck, 1779) https://www.schoenbrunn.at/en/

The decision to establish a technical museum was made in 1908, and construction of the building started in 1909. On June 20, 1909, Emperor Franz Josef laid the foundation stone. The museum was opened in 1918. The permanent exhibition categories include: Nature and Knowledge: astronomy, principals, physics; Heavy industry: mining, iron, steel; Energy; Mass production - luxury goods; Everyday life - directions for use; Communications and information media; Musical instruments; Transport; Basic Research - A great adventure. Our tradition has been to collect products designed or produced in Austria. Today, we are collecting the ‘culture of technology’ from the user’s viewpoint, i.e. applications such as they are used by the people who live in Austria today. As a rich collection of products from the former crown lands and dominions of the Habsburgs, the historical sections of the collection have always had a transnational flavour, from the very outset, and in today’s Europe they have become all the more relevant for it.

Parks & Nature

Topped by Otto Wagner’s glimmering art-nouveau church, Steinhofgründe is the most underrated of Vienna’s city parks. Sauntering along its pebbled paths, past wild raspberry and blackberry bushes, you’re just as likely to come across kite-flying adults as you are children clambering over huge forest playgrounds built entirely from natural materials. Old oaks and ageing apple trees create calming arbours, complete with wooden picnic tables. For the best views over the city, seek out the hand-carved sun loungers and allow the countryside to work its unwinding magic.

Another high spot close by is Jubiläumswarte. This is accessible by bus, car, or hiking (Hike 4). The tower is very tall and thin but it’s quite cool being at the top with the wind in your face. The view is more of hills and rural scenes as opposed to city but it’s still worth checking out. https://www.travelanddestinations.com/best-rooftops-patios-and-viewpoints-in-vienna/ Address: Johann-Staud-Straße 80, 1160

In the oak-filled woodland of Lainzer Tiergarten, you’ll find snuffling wild boars, giant-horned goats, mischievous squirrels and serene deer freely roaming the grassy meadows and mossy forest floors. The gardens’ walking trails and wide open heaths are framed with fragrant cherry trees and the humming drill of woodpeckers in the warmer months. Come winter, cross-country skiing and near-silent restorative treks across snow-encrusted trails are possible. Hidden within the former hunting ground is Princess Sisi’s Hermesvilla, a marble mini-palace famously gifted to her by Franz Joseph I in 1881. Stop in for a queenly coffee and cake on the terrace.

Everything Else

Detox at Therme Wien Oberlaa A modern bathing complex built upon Roman-era thermal springs, Therme Wien Oberlaa is a wide, unwinding wonderland of Jacuzzis, soothing Finnish saunas, trickling grotto pools and more spa treatments than you can throw a mud pack at. Silent zones are dotted with sun loungers, bold blue whirlpools and complimentary books, and you’re just as likely to find an aromatic steam room as you are an unashamed local strolling around starkers. https://www.thermewien.at/en/
