Our tradition has been to collect products designed or produced in Austria. Today, we are collecting the ‘culture of technology’ from the user’s viewpoint, i.e. applications such as they are used by the people who live in Austria today. As a rich collection of products from the former crown lands and dominions of the Habsburgs, the historical sections of the collection have always had a transnational flavour, from the very outset, and in today’s Europe they have become all the more relevant for it.

Topped by Otto Wagner’s glimmering art-nouveau church, Steinhofgründe is the most underrated of Vienna’s city parks. Sauntering along its pebbled paths, past wild raspberry and blackberry bushes, you’re just as likely to come across kite-flying adults as you are children clambering over huge forest playgrounds built entirely from natural materials. Old oaks and ageing apple trees create calming arbours, complete with wooden picnic tables. For the best views over the city, seek out the hand-carved sun loungers and allow the countryside to work its unwinding magic.

Another high spot close by is Jubiläumswarte. This is accessible by bus, car, or hiking (Hike 4). The tower is very tall and thin but it’s quite cool being at the top with the wind in your face. Hidden within the former hunting ground is Princess Sisi’s Hermesvilla, a marble mini-palace famously gifted to her by Franz Joseph I in 1881. Stop in for a queenly coffee and cake on the terrace.
