The Traditional Long House is one long floor space under long ton palm leaves woven into a watertight roof. Tradition provides a veranda for visitors and just laying about. A mattress is provided for the veranda leisure and sleeping inside.

المسكن
The Long House is a traditional dwelling, so you will sleep in the same way the people of Sabu have slept for thousands of years. You will have this long house to your self. Your host is 30 meters away.

إمكانية وصول الضيف
You will have access to the family's home across the road and be welcome to join in on activities such as cooking.

أشياء أخرى يجب ملاحظتها
The bathroom is an Indonesian mandi style wash toilet facilities.I'm pleased to see you arrived safely on Sabu.
We hope you find the long house acceptable.
Those long houses are apparently an turned upside down replica of the first boat the Sabunese people arrived in when they arrived from India.

The bed linen has been freshly cleaned for you.

Watch your head going in and out of the Long House and the toilet.

Janse's brothers are fishermen so you should have plenty of access to fish. Janse's mum Wilamina does most of the cooking.

Don't hesitate to ask Janse for anything.
On Fridays and Mondays Janse is home most of the day because she doesn't usually have to teach at the school on Mondays and Fridays.

Janse has friends who make the ikat cloths.
Ikats on Sabu are a source of great pride for the women and they have many traditional designs.
I find the best ones are on the older women because they have put more work into them and have used the lonton palm to make the thread. They also have natural dies which they colour the cloth with. Indigo is abundant on Sabu.

There are sometimes cock fights near her village. This causes the women to bring out their ikats as they are very proud of their work.

It is worth going to the church services while you are there as the women dress up in their finest clothes and they really appreciate the presence of visitors. They sing amazing songs in the church. Ask them to sing ‘Amazing Grace' in Bahasa Indonesian. If you are invited to someones house after church they will sit you on their verandah and not inside their house as that is the tradition. They will most probably offer you juice from the lonton palm. Its very sweet and is also fermented later then distilled into sopi at 50% proof.

Its worth getting to know the priest as priests on the island have access to everything.

Janse is a very highly respected woman in her village of Daieko on Sabu and effectively head of the village. Her father Johannas once owned all of the land in this village but gave land to other people to eventually form a village. She will probably be required to take you to the Kepala to give him a copy of your passport for security. Janse has a photocopier and is authorised to sign documents for the Government.

Janse's father once fell from a lonton palm and injured his back so he doesn't usually go far from his own little miniature longhouse.

Spoused with children. I like to be able to build and create things, I enjoy learning new things, I enjoy challenging my boundaries, Sharing conversation and interests. I love bamboo gardens :-) I like travel and especially to Indonesia. As a guest I like to know the host has put extra effort into the preparation of their accommodation and personalised it for me. If I have a life motto it is ‘persistence’. When a task looks scary and enormous I proceed one step at a time. “The key to being a host is being considerate, listening to your guests, and understanding their needs. While they're here, this is their home.”
