Covid-19 Update:
We have made adjustments to how we host this summer to ensure peace of mind and distance. Miller's Hut is only available to book alongside John's Hut (together they sleep 4). This will ensure the washroom is for your personal use only. We request a 10am prompt checkout to allow for airing/cleaning/site preparation.

--------
Around the millpond to John's Hut, sitting in its own private paddock. The larger of our two characterful glamping accommodations (17ft x 6ft), this hut is equipped for longer stays with crockery and cookware plus a toaster and electric kettle. Snug during those autumn and winter months, the comfortable small double bed has a supportive mattress and is dressed in pretty pink cotton ticking from Toast, with an all season hypoallergenic duvet made from 100% grade A long-fibre Mulberry silk. There is an additional quilt if you need an extra layer! The blue Hungarian dresser is stocked with all that you will need for your stay; a trug of cutlery, crockery, glasses, utensils. You will find cupboard basics in John's Hut, including tea, coffee, sugar, salt & pepper.

The small Salamander stove will keep you toasty warm on those colder days ... in the mornings throw open the door and watch the ducks on the millpond.

Later, wrap yourself in a blanket, light a candle and sit at the pine table overlooking the chestnut tree with a pot of tea and a board game taken from the wooden box. Why not sizzle some sausages over the campfire on the tripod grill and enjoy a glass of wine whilst chasing stars under our exceptionally dark night skies!

Through the gate and under the trees is a table and chairs overlooking the small island in the millpond as well as a relaxing hammock chair. In the warmer months there is an old French day bed with a ticking mattress, dressed in cushions for your use. We ask that all soft furnishings are put in the hut overnight or before you go out if it looks like it's going to rain.

You are welcome to use the Rocket stove, please ask as smaller pieces of wood will have to be prepared and there is a £5/per bucket charge.

Under the hut is a 'belly box' with blankets, cushions and a lantern (during damper months, these will be in the cupboard under the bed). You will also find a box of cookware under the hut and items for washing up (a bowl, washing up liquid, cloths & a brush, tea towels ~ there is a butt of water for heating behind the hut).

In the rustic Field Kitchen, situated in one of our stables, is a small fridge, a two stove electric hob, toaster and kettle. There is additional cooking equipment for you to use. Fresh water comes out of the tap for drinking and cooking, and there is additional space for washing up. We take recycling seriously here and ask that if possible food waste is separated from general rubbish, into the bins provided, as well as bottles, cans etc. Further information will be available in the hut.

Your breakfast basket will be left in the Field Kitchen for you (including homemade bread, muesli, stewed fruit, jams, butter, milk, juice and ground coffee).

Alternatively if you have time, we can provide you with a basket of locally sourced goodies to cook over the fire. Our baskets contain: a loaf of homemade bread (made with Stoate's stoneground flour, milled here), butter, jam, milk, apple juice, locally sourced sausages (x 4) and bacon (x 6 rashers), half a dozen eggs from our chickens, tomatoes and a can of baked beans. The cost is £20 and will feed two people. Please let me know at the time of booking whether you would like this option and I can send a request for money via Airbnb. (I also hear that Compton Abbas Airfield, just up the road, also does a great cooked breakfast!)

A couple of minutes from the hut and situated in the mill yard is a bright and clean washroom with a flushing loo and hot shower. A hairdryer and bath towels are provided for your stay. These facilities are shared with Miller's Hut guests if the two huts are booked together.

STAR GAZING: We tend to look at landscape as everything up to the horizon, but what about what's above it? We are situated on the edge of Cranborne Chase AONB, an exceptionally tranquil, deeply rural area, where we have access to some of the darkest skies in the whole country. Gazing skyward you can enjoy hundreds of spectacular constellations. With 80% of UK residents living under light polluted skies, we see thousands of stars overhead compared with a handful seen from towns and cities. From July to Christmas, you can enjoy the Milky Way in all its glory; in the winter star clusters, and in the spring planets and galaxies.

You can be a novice with a casual interest or a professional to uncover the secrets of the universe. The AONB recently gained international recognition for its dark skies and is designated an 'International Dark Sky Reserve'. If you enjoy night walking, our dark skies are also good for nocturnal wildlife, owls and moths.

The important stuff~
Check in: after 4pm
Check out: 10am

We suggest that you bring heavy boots if it's wet.been wet and a head torch (we do a provide torch).

There is an awning under which you can hang wet coats and leave wellies, hiking boots etc.

The hut is well lit and has an exterior light by the door.

Our home is an old property and she can be a little quirky at times! If you find something isn't working properly please shout out and we can give her a gentle nudge. Please don't wait until you get home as we want you to have a lovely and restful stay.

--------------------------
OPTIONAL EXTRAS:

WOOD BUNDLE £5
Small pieces of wood for the Salamander stove are in the hut. Two buckets of wood are provided for the fire pit for each night of your stay. Should you require extra, wood bundles for the fire pit and Salamander stove are £5/bucket each. (We respectfully ask that you don't use wood specially cut for the stove in the firepit.)

KENNEL: £15 PER STAY (not per dog)
Space for two quiet dogs, only dogs please who can be controlled around livestock. The outside kennel is by the main house, I'm afraid we can't allow dogs in the hut.

Enjoy some Miller's Huts Dorset R&R!

أشياء أخرى يجب ملاحظتها
Unfortunately the hut isn't suitable for children or babies.

We are close to the A350.

John's Hut is in a paddock near a small mill cottage. There are occasionally people in residence (it is not rented out to the public). We have been careful and thoughtful with the orientation of the hut and hurdles have been placed in the paddock to provide privacy screening.

Shaftesbury والمملكة المتحدة

My husband's family have been milling since eighteen-thirty-two and his father started out on his own at Cann Mills in nineteen-forty-seven. Cann Mills was recorded in the Domesday Book and one of five mills within a mile on the River Sturkel, a tributary to the River Stour. We produce organic stoneground flour using French Burr millstones primarily driven by a late 19th Century iron waterwheel that is fed by the millpond.

We are situated on the borders of Dorset, Wiltshire and Somerset and have access to many historical places. Bath, Longleat, Salisbury, Stonehenge, Brownsea Island, the Isle of Purbeck, Thomas Hardy country and the Jurassic Coast are all within easy reach to explore, as are the beaches at Bournemouth, Sandbanks and Studland. Local National Trust properties include Kingston Lacey, Lytes Carey and Stourhead.

There are plenty of traditional pubs in the area, the Chalke Valley has many country pubs with beer gardens and good bar menus. Of course there are many gastro pubs too; including the King John at Tollard Royal, the Museum at Farnham, The Fontmell at Fontmell Magna and Donhead St Andrew's popular Forester Inn.

There is lots of lovely walking in the area. Why not enjoy an invigorating walk over Fontmell Down which has far-reaching views across the Blackmore Vale and a pint at The Fontmell, Fontmell Magna. The open chalk grassland of the lower slopes is covered in wildflowers in the spring and summer months and famous for its wild orchids.

We have compiled a folder of local knowledge for your use and we have local maps that you can borrow.

I am a Mum/Graphic Designer (and yogi) married to Mike, a fifth generation flour miller. Whilst he has lived here all his life, I have spent much of my adult life living overseas but am happily back in Dorset. We have Pip the cat, Betty the Staffy and Blackberry the tortoise, sheep, chickens and some gorgeous Hereford cattle who come and stay for summer grazing. Travel, walking, sailing and the provenance of good food, are just some of our passions and we feel blessed to be able to return to this glorious corner of Dorset we call home. The two Huts are my creative outlet and we both enjoy hosting by our millpond and ensuring that you have a happy and memorable escape with us.
