Habana Vieja وLa Habana وكوبا

Old Havana, is the old part of the city. Declared Patrimony of the Humanity by the Unesco, began to be carefully restored in recent years. It is remarkable the contrast between the restored areas and the rest of the city, practically in ruins. The colonial and baroque architecture, mixed with neoclassicism, Art Nuveau, and Art Deco, are shown with all wealth in this neighborhood, as well as in the adjacent neighborhood, Centro Habana.

Old Havana has several treasures to discover. He deserves to spend several hours, to live his environment and impregnate himself with his charm. It is a neighborhood to enjoy walking, both day and night.

Havana is a safe city, although at first sight some streets do not seem to inspire confidence by its appearance, you can walk with tranquility at all times.

The main arteries of Old Havana are Obispo, Oficios, O'Reilly and Mercaderes streets. Throughout them, we can see a succession of palaces, churches, convents, plazas, and historic buildings of great architectural value. Most are today museums, art galleries, shops, hotels and restaurants. There are many interesting places to stop.

The main streets of Old Havana flow into squares: the Cathedral Square, the Plaza de Armas, the Plaza de San Francisco de Asís and the Old Square. Surrounded by bars and restaurants, the squares are always lively, and are the scene of artists, artisans and musicians.

As we tour Old Havana, we find some sites that are very popular with tourists.

Some emblematic bars such as La Bodeguita del Medio, El Floridita, or Hotel Ambos Mundos, became famous for being the favorites of the writer Ernest Hemingway, a very present character in the city, who said "my daiquiri in Floridita, my mojito in The Bodeguita ". On the other hand, the hotel Ambos Mundos, which he defined as "a good place to write", was one of his residences. In Room 511, Hemingway wrote the first chapters of "For Whom the Bell Rings", and today he remains as he lived it, including his typewriter and other original objects.

There are two pharmacies that will draw your attention: the Taquechel pharmacy, and the Museum of Habanera Pharmacy La Réunion. With impeccable restoration, they function as small museums. They have an exquisite original Art Nuveau atmosphere, collections of apothecary jugs and other curious objects.

The Convent of St. Francis of Assisi, located in the square of the same name, is an old convent of Franciscan friars. The building had different destinies throughout its history, including the taking by the English, who transformed it into a masonic temple. It currently functions as a Museum of Sacred Art. It has a beautiful outdoor garden dedicated to Mother Teresa of Calcutta, where sculptures by contemporary artists are exhibited. While the Basilica Minor, it functions as a concert hall for its wonderful acoustics. The whole place conveys a lot of peace, and touring its galleries and cloisters, is a delight.

From Old Havana, you can easily reach the four castles that guard the city. They are:
The Castle of the Royal Force: declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco, was completed in 1577, and was built as a defense of the city. It has an architecture of medieval influence and is considered a great work of engineering. Today it is home to the Museum of Navigation, and stores a collection of scale models of ships and galleons, as well as treasures rescued from sunken ships. It is also home to Giraldilla, a famous Cuban icon sculpture, and Havana Club rum.

The Castle of San Carlos de la Cabaña is the second largest fortress in America - the first is in Colombia. Here he established his command Ernesto Che Guevara, the first months after the Revolution. Some documents are still being kept on display. From this castle, every night at 9:00 PM, the ceremony of the Cañonazo is performed, a military spectacle that commemorates the firing of the cannon that was executed at the time of the colony. It announced the closing of the city walls and the port, as protection against pirates and invaders.

On the other hand, from the Castle of the Morro, you have a wide view of the city. Inside the castle there are some exhibitions between them, an exhibition of lighthouses. In fact, the place worked as a school for lighthouse keepers.

While the Castle of San Salvador de la Punta, is the one you see in typical Havanan postcards.
