ماذا ستفعل

I will pick you up at Seibu Chichibu station at 10:00 am and we’ll head up to the Mountains where an 800 year old Buddhist pilgrimage begins.

At Temple 1 I will teach you how to properly enter and pray at a Buddhist temple. You can buy a “goshuincho”, (book for collecting temple and shrine stamps) here, and hang an "Ema" (wooden prayer board) with a special prayer or wish.

At Temple 2 there is a section of the pilgrimage path that descends the mountain through an ancient Japanese cedar forest.

Then it’s on to Temple 4, the most popular temple of the pilgrimage. We’ll have lunch at the noodle shop here before exploring the compound famous for it’s 1,300 statues, including a rare "Mary Kannon". I will share some of the history and secrets of the temple before we head back to Chichibu at 2:30.

Back in town I will give you a map and point out temples and shrines you can walk or bike to (bike rental in front of station) if you want to keep exploring and collecting temple stamps on your own.

Chichibu’s historic main street is lined with small shops and restaurants and dead ends at a 1,800 year old Shinto shrine. There is a great onsen in the station, and plenty of trains back to Tokyo.

Recharge and reconnect in the sacred mountains that Tokyoites have made pilgrimage to for over a thousand years.

I am recommended by the Chichibu Pilgrimage Association.

I’ve been exploring and photographing the pilgrimage since moving to Chichibu in 2010.

My husband is the assistant to the head monk of the Chichibu Pilgrimage.

A misconception people have about Zen Buddhism is that it’s strict and demanding. There is an etiquette, but Buddhist monks are friendly and relaxed.

Zen is about being fully in the present moment, and meeting life with gratitude and equanimity.

Zen is about immersing yourself in nature. “Let nature be your teacher”.
Is an important Zen concept.

Zen is about loving kindness towards yourself and others.

Come experience Zen for yourself. I would love to be your guide.

You can see lots more photographs and videos of the Chichibu pilgrimage on Instagram at #pilgrimagejapan.

This tour was my favourite part of my trip to Japan. Ashley picked us up from the train station and drove us around to several temples and shrines. She was so lovely and warm and very knowledgeable about Buddhist and the local area. Each temple was unique and Ashley shared with us so many experiences and information that we would not have been able to do alone. The lunch was delicious and such an authentic, local experience. We even saw wild monkeys at one of the temples. Chichibu is an amazing place and so different from Tokyo, but only a short train ride away. The tour was a great way to learn about Buddhism and the temples and Ashley is so friendly. It was like being shown around by a family friend. Thank you so much. I would recommend this tour to everyone.

I decided to take this tour the day before my birthday as my goal for my upcoming trip around the sun is to grow spiritually. Ashley was a great guide, her instructions to get to Chichibu were detailed. She checked on me along the way as I traveling alone. She was on time, friendly, knowledgeable and shared with her knowledge on buddhism. I truly recommend this trip as I left Chichibu empowered and ready to visit more shrines and temples in Japan with different eyes. Ashley is very thoughtful she went out of her way to stop at 100 yen store as she wanted to make sure I got some last minute souvenirs and she even treated me with ice cream to celebrate my birthday. Overall I would recommend this tour as you truly learn about buddhism in Japan, its history and rituals. Bonus: Ashley is into photography so she took some candid shots of me and send them to me. I truly appreciate this gesture as a solo traveler.

Entrance to the temples is free, but be prepared with cash if you want to buy charms or get temple stamps. Most temples only accept cash. There is a great onsen in the station, and lots of sightseeing spots you can walk to on your own after the tour.

ماذا أحضر

Comfortable clothes and shoes for walking.

Cash for temple stamps, souvenirs, onsen and anything else you might need. Not all shops accept credit cards.
