ماذا ستفعل

Is it hard to live as a Cuban? By signing up I will show you the real deal. This is the original Support for the Cuban People experience and the tour will count towards the "Support for the Cuban People" Visa.

We will meet in Old Havana and I'll explain about the successes and setbacks that are unique to Cuba including how the educational and health care systems work. You will face firsthand the 3 main problems in Havana. Our first stop will be a local green market and a bodega to show how Cubans do their groceries given the tight budget constraint.

We will walk through its streets to show you all the historical and hidden places around this area. There you will interact with locals and appreciate all the contrasts of the environment and the cultural elements that embellish life in this community. Then we will take a break at a luxurious hotel where I will invite you to a drink and continue the debate before heading to Vedado area for the purpose of enjoying a tasty Creole lunch, prepared with few inputs, but plenty of love.

We will end the experience tasting an authentic Cuban coffee while we exchange ideas and discuss about the current situation of the country and its future. By the end of the day you will have a wider perception of the economic, cultural and social conditions of daily life in Havana understanding the importance of visiting Cuba to support its people.

I have traveled to several countries but I can confirm life in Cuba has no equal, I love living here. Since I started hosting 2 years ago I've always shown to foreigners the real meaning of being Cuban, fact I've reflected on several occasions on the thematic tour “Support for the Cuban People”. My experience as a young entrepreneur and economist graduated from Havana University has provided me with a unique vision about my nation's current situation. My purpose is to share that vision so visitors from all over the world can understand and enjoy a little piece of Cuba, the “freeze in time” island.

My 20-year-old daughter and I had our last Havana experience with Albert. Our visit coincided with the escalating covid-19 pandemic, so we had to cut our trip short, but Albert did his utmost to make our afternoon memorable. We asked him difficult questions such as “are you allowed to speak freely and express criticism of your government?” and “do you think havana is a good place to be during a global pandemic?” His responses were remarkably candid and insightful. He took us to a charming restaurant that serves his favorite ropa vieja, a ritzy rooftop government hotel, and another chic rooftop bar which made me think of Paris in summer. We learned about his aspirations and concerns, and we shared with him the challenges of living in a hyper affluent country divided by wealth disparity and political polarization. Memorable and highly recommended.

This was a great tour!! Loved it!! We learned so much about the culture, had a great authentic lunch, and even took the public bus! Take this tour early in your trip to get a feel for other areas you want to explore and get acquainted with the city.

Despite our very last-minute reservation, Albert's colleague, Natalia, was able to accommodate us. It ended up being just our group, which made for a particularly personalized experience. Natalia is going to University for Economics, so she had great insight regarding the economic situation of Havana, both from her personal experiences as well as from school. We are very inquisitive and she was able to answer all of our questions thoughtfully. We were first taken to a market (closed by the time we got there as it was afternoon), where she described how it operated and also explained how the bodega works, monthly rations, etc. We then walked by a famous ice cream place, where she explained its background. At the time of day we took the bus, it was not crowded, so we were able to continue our conversation about Havana life on the bus to Old Havana. Natalia explained the purpose of how the area is set up and explained the various buildings we passed. We went to the top of a famous hotel where we were able to see the stark contrast of the invested-in Old Havana vs. the run-down homes just one street over. She explained how most people in Havana live. We could have stayed for a drink, but since it was a touristy area, we chose to continue to the tour. We stopped at a soft-serve ice cream vendor to pick up a cone while we walked the streets of Old Havana. Natalia explained the various work options people have and introduced us to a sweet family that lived with many other people in a tiny apartment to understand the economic conditions of many people in Havana. Natalia also explained the schools from kindergarten to university. To finish the afternoon, we ate traditional pork with rice/beans and plantains from a local restaurant. Here we got to talk a little bit about where we are from as well, so she could understand a bit more about our city. It was a lovely, insightful afternoon that I would highly recommend to people visiting Havana! THANK YOU NATALIA! =)

Take this tour if you would like to learn about the hidden aspects of Havana and Cuba. Albert and Natalia were very knowledgeable about the economic and social development of the country, and they shared both big picture views and personal stories on the Cuban society, government, and more. If you are curious about things beyond the usual tourist glamour of Havana, this tour is a must.
