Guests will visit Casa de Nossa Senhora d'Aurora and it's gardens, guided by one of the owners who explains the history of the house and the family. You will visit a total of 7 rooms, including the Old Kitchen, filled with a collection of old kitchen appliances, the Grand Entrance Room, the Indian Room, the Chapel, the Library and the Dining Room. We then go out into the garden, built after the house was finished. It's the typical 19th century "Jardin à la Française", with box hedges and camelia that are over a hundred years old. Our garden is classified as a Historical Garden by the Portuguese Association of Historical Gardens, and integrates the Historical Gardens Route of the Minho region.
Casa de Nossa Senhora d'Aurora is classified as Monument of Public Interest owned by the same family since the 16th century. Its rooms hold period furniture and curiosities gathered over the years. It is one of the most prominent houses in Ponte de Lima, and belonged to our grandfather, Conde d'Aurora, who was also an important personality during the 30's, 40's and 50's, having published numerous books and articles about local traditions and culture.

My brothers and I inherited this property in 2012, and have since started to do guided visits to the house and garden, sharing with our guests this 18th century noble house.
Growing up in this house, I learned all the family history and the stories told by my mother, aunts and grandmother in front of the fireplace. I share these with our guests, making them re-live old times and meet the by-gone characters that once lived here. I know every object, especially those in my father's kitchen appliance and gadget collection. I speak Portuguese, English, and reasonable Spanish, French and Italian.

Rosário family home is steeped in local, regional and national history and as a guide she brings it life with knowledge, passion and ironic humour. Between the house itself and the adjoining garden, I found this a hidden gem and would happily recommend it.

“The Casa do Conde da Aurora in Ponte de Lima is a grand, privately owned town house with an eighteenth-century range along the street front, and a Baroque family chapel adjoining. It was the home of the Conde da Aurora, a distinguished diplomat, writer and collector, and his memory and splendid collectors are preserved and celebrated by his daughter, Rosario, who gave my wife and I a fascinating tour of the interiors, including the reception rooms, chapel, library, dining room and kitchen. The high-vaulted rooms are filled with curiosities collected by the count and his father, including a remarkable set of Indian furniture. We learnt much about the life of the Portuguese nobility in the nineteenth century and of their descendants in the twentieth. After we had seen the interiors Rosario gave us cups of home-grown lemongrass tea, which we sipped as she took us on a delightful tour of the beautiful late nineteenth-century garden, the plan of which is framed on the wall in one of the rooms. The garden is dramatically positioned high above the street, with a pond and an abundance of exotic, colourful and richly scented trees, plants and bushes. Rosario was extremely hospitable, even offering us the opportunity to enjoy the garden in our own time after the formal part of our visit had finished. We highly recommend this excellent personalised tour.” Dr Gordon Higgott, London.

We would thoroughly recommend this experience for anyone interested in history & culture . The house is like a museum & it’s very special to have a member of the family as a guide . A unique tour which has been a highlight of our Portugal holiday

If, like me, you wonder what it's like beyond the walls of those stately old houses you see in lovely towns you visit while on holiday, this is an experience you shouldn't miss. On a warm evening, Rosario gave us a fascinating tour of her 18th century ancestral home and brought to life for us the history of her forbearers. The house is as it was lived in down through the generations. But it's much more than a museum. Through her stories and the many personal mementoes that adorn the rooms - family photos, beautiful bed clothes and intriguing furniture - Rosario took us way back in time in this beautiful noble house on the edge of lovely Ponte de Lima. In the elegant garden, a Mimosa was in full bloom. As we strolled through the paths, we discussed the responsibilities of inheriting such an historic home. We comforted ourselves with glasses of chilled lemon verbena tea that Rosario had made from leaves picked in her garden that morning. We were lucky enough to have some home made biscuits too. What a delightful way to depth and memory to your holiday. Thank you so much Rosario and Bon courage.
