ماذا ستفعل

Your paddle towards the outer islands begins in a sheltered bay. Soon the mainland is nowhere to be seen and you're surrounded by water and wilderness. The route goes northeast through the forested middle part of archipelago, where many common birds breed. Families of ducks and swans with their chicks are swimming along. White-tailed eagles nest in large trees not far from here and can be seen soaring high up in sky. Perhaps you can glide close to Grey herons as they stand absolutely still in the water watching their prey, or watch them flying low over the sea.

Your journey continues east towards one of the last forested islands before hundreds of barren islets take over, close to the open sea. It has been a somewhat strenuous first day, and it's time to set up camp and settle in.

Day 2
The first half of the day is spent quietly gliding through a superb bird sanctuary as you sharpen your bird watching skills. You may spot elegant aviators like Ospreys or Montagu’s harriers. Eiders, a very characteristic bird of the outer archipelago, are plentiful. Bird species that are typical for the Baltic breed here – Velvet scoters, Tufted ducks and Razorbills, in protection of squawking colonies of sea gulls and terns. You take lunch at an amazing lookout with views of the whole sanctuary from above.

The expedition continues south close to another beautiful sanctuary, with massive colonies of Herring gulls. There is a good chance to spot waders like Oystercatchers, Ruddy turnstones, Sandpipers and Ringed plovers here. After a day full to the brim of exciting bird watching and leisurely kayaking, you set up camp outside the sanctuary to the south. You may have spotted seals already, but tomorrow you very likely will!

Day 3
This camp is a two-nighter, so no need to pack everything up. You aim east today, further than most kayakers ever go. The paddle goes near the seal sanctuary where spotting seals is almost a given. Depending on weather conditions, the group may go by a very quiet boat, but hopefully you can take your kayaks! This Grey seal colony of sixty to seventy animals is growing steadily in numbers every year. Early summer is a fantastic time of to spot seals and their cubs sun bathe on the barren flat rocks.

Day 4
This morning, the route continues further south skirting the sanctuaries of the Missjö archipelago, where clusters of hundreds of tiny skerries stretch for ten kilometres. The open sea is your backdrop and it’s absolutely beautiful out here. You will spot large colonies of gulls and Arctic terns. These are breeding grounds for a huge variety of birds - Black guillemots, Eiders, Velvet scoters, Red-breasted mergansers, Shelducks, Redshanks and Oystercatchers to name a few. White-tailed eagles and Great cormorants are common, and maybe you'll spot Ospreys or Arctic skuas. There are also regular seal sightings here.

Towards the end of the day you reach the famous Kupa Klint lookout. It’s a cairn on a hill, used by navigating seafarers for centuries. The view up here is stunning with the whole Missjö archipelago spreading out below. There are many great camp spots around and you settle in for your last night in this island wonderland.

Day 5
A very beautiful route westward through the middle archipelago awaits, with more shelter and larger islands than you’re used to by now. After spending so much time in the outer archipelago, you may be surprised to see the idyllic old houses that are so characteristic for the area. It's a very different landscape than the one you left behind by the blue horizon. Your amazing wildlife journey ends at a spot further south than where you started. You’ll head home full of knowledge not only about Saint Anna, but with many tools to spot wildlife wherever you may go next.
